A Commitment to Women’s Economic Equity—For Life
Some moments ask more of us.
Nearly 40 years ago, NAWBO helped change the course of women’s entrepreneurship with the passage of H.R. 5050, securing a woman’s right to access business credit without a male co-signer. That advocacy milestone reshaped economic opportunity for generations of women business owners and remains one of the most powerful examples of what’s possible when women stand together.
Today, NAWBO stands at another pivotal moment.
Women-owned microbusinesses—the backbone of our economy and the majority of women-owned enterprises in the U.S.—remain systematically excluded from capital, policy and procurement systems because they lack a modern, recognized definition. Without that definition, too many women-led businesses remain invisible to lenders, policymakers and investors.
NAWBO is currently working with Congress to codify the definition of a microbusiness. We believe that any business with 50 or fewer employees and less than $5 million in annual revenue should qualify as a microbusiness. All federal agencies will then use this definition and the SBA will be able to better support access to capital for these women business owners.
The NAWBO Legacy Lifetime Membership was created for those who recognize this moment for what it is and are willing to stand behind the next great advocacy milestone. This is not simply a membership. It is a declaration of belief and a legacy of impact.
